Carol d’Essen

Hi! If you are curious to know a little bit more about my skills and experience, here it is : )

My professional background is in communications, teaching/mentoring and people and culture teams. I started my career as a journalist in Brazil, working in a variety of media (TV, radio, digital and print). I then moved to Mozambique, where I worked for 3 years as a journalism professor, mentoring students at the country's public university.

After moving to Europe to do my Masters in Media and Globalisation, I joined a global non-profit organisation (Avaaz.org) where I worked as a campaigner developing campaigns around the world about topics like environment, corruption, fake news, human rights and more.

Following some years working as a campaigner and having discovered my love for managing and mentoring people I moved to the People and Culture team, where I found my home. I spent years supporting staff in their professional development and developing training programmes for the organisation. After gaining a lot of experience with internal coaching, I decided to focus exclusively on my passion and opened my own coaching business.

If you are working with me, you should know that my two core values are adventure and love.

The adventure part of me manifests through sports, nature, extreme curiosity about people and pushing myself out of my comfort zone. Through my experience as an athlete, I have learned to be disciplined, have a growth mindset and keep myself and my teammates motivated. I bring this to my coaching style, challenging clients when I see they are ready to take the next step, keeping them motivated and accountable. Through my genuine curiosity, I ask questions to deeply understand my clients so that they can understand themselves. Finally, as a team player, I truly celebrate my clients' strengths and achievements.

My other value, love, is demonstrated through my relationships with my family and friends. I invest time and energy in nurturing these and am also fascinated by the connections that happen with strangers. I believe there are always things that unite us - and love is one of them. In my coaching approach, I show love through deep listening, empathy and understanding to know when it is time to push someone and when it is time to go deeper and explore the feeling they are experiencing.

I also love to share my experiences and learnings through writing - you can get some inspiration by subscribing to my monthly newsletter here.
